Method For Reducing Variability And Oscillations In Load Balancing Recommendations Using Historical Values And Workload Metrics

View page
US Patent:
7647405, Jan 12, 2010
Filed:
Feb 6, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/348046
Inventors:
John A. Bivens - Ossining NY, US
Donna N Dillenberger - Yorktown Heights NY, US
Yuksel Gunal - New York NY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 15/173
G06F 15/16
G06F 15/177
US Classification:
709226, 709223, 709235, 709221
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of preventing harmful variability and oscillation in weight based, dynamic load balancing environments. More specifically, the present invention relates to methods to effectively determine the magnitude of weight changes in dynamic load balancing environments based on the workload magnitude and server farm capacity. This method depends on the development of new multi-system characteristics such as a relative workload metric to characterize the workload of the system relative to the collective capacity of all of the systems to handle the workload.

Method For Integrating Downstream Performance And Resource Usage Statistics Into Load Balancing Weights

View page
US Patent:
7817578, Oct 19, 2010
Filed:
May 6, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/115591
Inventors:
John Alan Bivens - Ossining NY, US
Yuksel Gunal - New York NY, US
Peter Bergersen Yocom - LaGrangeville NY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
H04L 12/26
US Classification:
370252, 370217, 370221, 370235
Abstract:
In datacenter environments, many copies of servicing components (application servers, http servers, etc) are used to handle larger loads. In these cases, incoming service requests typically go to a load balancer to be directed to the appropriate servicing component. Modern advances in technology, like the Server/Application State Protocol, have allowed load balancers to receive recommendations in the form of numerical weights to describe the best distribution for the incoming requests. The present invention provides a method for computing path oriented statistics that enable load balancing algorithms to transparently integrate downstream performance and resource usage statistics into load balancing weights.

Method And Apparatus For Managing Central Processing Unit Resources Of A Logically Partitioned Computing Environment Without Shared Memory Access

View page
US Patent:
7844709, Nov 30, 2010
Filed:
Sep 20, 2006
Appl. No.:
11/533558
Inventors:
Jeffrey D. Aman - Poughkeepsie NY, US
Yuk L. Chan - Poughkeepsie NY, US
Yuksel Gunal - New York NY, US
Hiren R. Shah - Highland NY, US
Mathew S. Thoennes - West Harrison NY, US
Peter B. Yocom - Lagrangeville NY, US
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G06F 15/173
US Classification:
709226, 709229, 714 39
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for managing CPU resources of a logically partitioned computing environment without shared memory access. A logical partition needing additional resources sends a message requesting such resources to a central domain manager, which sends messages to other partitions in the same group requesting that they assess their ability to donate resources to the requesting partition. Upon receiving such assessment request, each logical partition assesses its ability to donate resources to the requesting partition and responds accordingly to the domain manager. If at least one partition responds that it can donate resources to the requesting partition, the domain manager sends a message to a selected donor partition requesting that it reconfigure itself to donate resources to the requesting partition. Upon receiving a notification from the donor partition that it has successfully reconfigured itself, the domain manager notifies the requesting partition, which reconfigures itself to accept the donated resources.

15/364650
Inventors:
- Armonk NY, US
Yuk L. Chan - ROCHESTER NY, US
Yuksel Gunal - New York NY, US
International Classification:
G06F 17/30
