Touch Controlled Voltage-Divider Device

View page
US Patent:
39684679, Jul 6, 1976
Filed:
Nov 1, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/519825
Inventors:
Stephen H. Lampen - San Francisco CA
William E. Hearn - Berkeley CA
International Classification:
H01C 1030
US Classification:
338119
Abstract:
A voltage divider device capable of providing any voltage in a preselected range of voltages, which voltage may be set by a touch of the finger is disclosed. The device includes a control element without frictional contacts and a voltage storage circuit controlled by the control element. A circuit including the device is described and embodiments of the device providing a visual indication of the setting of the device are disclosed.

Precision Absolute Value Amplifier For A Precision Voltmeter

US Patent:
45188777, May 21, 1985
Filed:
Oct 19, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/435157
Inventors:
William E. Hearn - Berkeley CA
Donald J. Rondeau - El Sobrante CA
Assignee:
The United States of America as represented by the United States
Department of Energy - Washington DC
International Classification:
H03K 522
G06G 712
US Classification:
307490
Abstract:
Bipolar inputs are afforded by the plus inputs of first and second differential input amplifiers. A first gain determining resister is connected between the minus inputs of the differential amplifiers. First and second diodes are connected between the respective minus inputs and the respective outputs of the differential amplifiers. First and second FETs have their gates connected to the outputs of the amplifiers, while their respective source and drain circuits are connected between the respective minus inputs and an output lead extending to a load resister. The output current through the load resister is proportional to the absolute value of the input voltage difference between the bipolar input terminals. A third differential amplifier has its plus input terminal connected to the load resister. A second gain determining resister is connected between the minus input of the third differential amplifier and a voltage source.
