Hydrogenolysis Of 5-Carbon Sugars, Sugar Alcohols, And Other Methods And Compositions For Reactions Involving Hydrogen

View page
US Patent:
6479713, Nov 12, 2002
Filed:
Oct 23, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/012890
Inventors:
Todd A. Werpy - West Richland WA
Alan H. Zacher - Kennewick WA
Dennis J. Miller - Okemos MI
Assignee:
Battelle Memorial Institute - Richland WA
International Classification:
C07C 2700
US Classification:
568863, 568861, 568862, 568864
Abstract:
Methods and compositions for reactions of hydrogen over a Re-containing catalyst with compositions containing a 5-carbon sugar, sugar alcohol, or lactic acid are described. It has been surprisingly discovered that reaction with hydrogen over a Re-containing multimetallic catalyst resulted in superior conversion and selectivity to desired products such as propylene glycol. A process for the synthesis of PG from lactate or lactic acid is also described.

US Patent:
6545175, Apr 8, 2003
Filed:
Oct 19, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/691143
Inventors:
Todd A. Werpy - West Richland WA
Michael A. Lilga - Richland WA
Assignee:
Battelle Memorial Institute - Richland WA
International Classification:
C07C 6730
US Classification:
560212, 560185, 560211
Abstract:
The present invention provides compounds having the formula: wherein: n is 0 or 1; R through R are independently selected from hydrogen, C to C alkyl, C to C aryl, C to C alkoxy, C to C aryloxy, C to C aralkyl; and R through R are hydrogen, C to C alkyl, C to C aryl, or C to C aralkyl. Methods of making and using these compounds are also described. Methods of converting -hydroxy carboxylic esters and acids to acrylates are also described.

Converting Sugars To Sugar Alcohols By Aqueous Phase Catalytic Hydrogenation

View page
US Patent:
6570043, May 27, 2003
Filed:
Apr 27, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/845646
Inventors:
Douglas C. Elliott - Richland WA
Todd A. Werpy - West Richland WA
Yong Wang - Richland WA
Assignee:
Battelle Memorial Institute - Richland WA
International Classification:
C07C 2700
US Classification:
568863, 518715
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of converting sugars to their corresponding sugar alcohols by catalytic hydrogenation in the aqueous phase. It has been found that surprisingly superior results can be obtained by utilizing a relatively low temperature (less than 120Â C. ), selected hydrogenation conditions, and a hydrothermally stable catalyst. These results include excellent sugar conversion to the desired sugar alcohol, in combination with long life under hydrothermal conditions.

US Patent:
6603021, Aug 5, 2003
Filed:
Jun 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/884602
Inventors:
Todd Werpy - West Richland WA
Yong Wang - Richland WA
Alan H. Zacher - Kennewick WA
Assignee:
Battelle Memorial Institute - Richland WA
International Classification:
C07D207267
US Classification:
548552
Abstract:
The present invention provides methods for making N-methylpyrrolidine and analogous compounds via hydrogenation. Novel catalysts for this process, and novel conditions/yields are also described. Other process improvements may include extraction and hydrolysis steps. Some preferred reactions take place in the aqueous phase. Starting materials for making N-methylpyrrolidine may include succinic acid, N-methylsuccinimide, and their analogs.
