Multi-Line Back Pressure Control System

View page
US Patent:
6659184, Dec 9, 2003
Filed:
Jul 15, 1998
Appl. No.:
09/115889
Inventors:
Timothy R. Tips - Spring TX
Brett W. Bouldin - Spring TX
Richard P. Rubbo - The Woodlands TX
Assignee:
Welldynamics, Inc. - Spring TX
International Classification:
F21B 3410
US Classification:
166375, 166 72, 166320
Abstract:
A multi-line back pressure control system for providing two way hydraulic line movement while maintaining back pressure control. Check valves are integrated in hydraulic fluid control lines extending downhole into a wellbore. Each check valve is pilot operated with pressure from another hydraulic line to selectively open the lines for two way fluid communication. Removal of the pilot pressure closes the check valves to provide passive back pressure control against catastrophic wellbore events. Pilot pressure operation between multiple pressurized lines can be provided with valves such as three-way, three-position piloted valves.

Appl. No.:
11/462077
Inventors:
Timothy R. Tips - Spring TX, US
Mitchell C. Smithson - Pasadena TX, US
Assignee:
Welldynamics, Inc. - Spring TX
International Classification:
E21B 28/00
E21B 34/10
US Classification:
166373, 166 666, 1661776, 166249, 166320, 166386
Abstract:
A pulse width modulated downhole flow control. A downhole flow control system includes a flow control device with a flow restrictor which variably restricts flow through the flow control device. An actuator varies a vibratory motion of the restrictor to thereby variably control an average flow rate of fluid through the flow control device. A method of controlling flow in a well includes the steps of: installing a flow control device in the well, the flow control device including a flow restrictor which variably restricts flow through the flow control device; and displacing the restrictor to thereby pulse a flow rate of fluid through the flow control device.

Abstract:
A single line control module for well tool actuation. A well tool control system includes an actuator, a control module for controlling pressure applied to the actuator, and a single line extending between the control module and a remote location, elevated pressure being applied to the line and exhausted from the line at the remote location to operate the actuator. Another well tool control system includes an actuator having first and second chambers, a line for applying elevated pressure to the actuator to operate the actuator, and a control module including an accumulator, and a valve. The valve has a first position in which the line is connected to the first chamber and the accumulator is connected to the second chamber, and a second position in which the line is connected to the second chamber and the accumulator is connected to the first chamber.
