Efficient Checkpoint Process

View page
US Patent:
7895164, Feb 22, 2011
Filed:
Mar 13, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/724082
Inventors:
Srinidhi Varadarajan - Blacksburg VA, US
Joseph Ruscio - Blacksburg VA, US
Michael Heffner - Blacksburg VA, US
Assignee:
Librato, Inc. - Santa Clara CA
International Classification:
G06F 17/00
US Classification:
707649, 707756
Abstract:
Approaches to efficiently creating a checkpoint of the process are described. In one approach, a method of performing a checkpoint operation on a process involves detecting a change in the contents of a memory page associated with the process. This change occurred after a preceding checkpoint operation. The method also involves modifying a data structure, at a location corresponding to the contents of that memory page.

Transparent Checkpointing And Process Migration In A Distributed System

View page
US Patent:
8489921, Jul 16, 2013
Filed:
Apr 7, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/420015
Inventors:
Srinidhi Varadarajan - Blacksburg VA, US
Joseph Ruscio - Blacksburg VA, US
Assignee:
Open Invention Network, LLC - Durham NC
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
G06F 11/1446
US Classification:
714 15, 714 16, 714 19, 714 20
Abstract:
A distributed system for creating a checkpoint for a plurality of processes running on the distributed system. The distributed system includes a plurality of compute nodes with an operating system executing on each compute node. A checkpoint library resides at the user level on each of the compute nodes, and the checkpoint library is transparent to the operating system residing on the same compute node and to the other compute nodes. Each checkpoint library uses a windowed messaging logging protocol for checkpointing of the distributed system. Processes participating in a distributed computation on the distributed system may be migrated from one compute node to another compute node in the distributed system by re-mapping of hardware addresses using the checkpoint library.

Log-Based Rollback-Recovery

View page
US Patent:
8631276, Jan 14, 2014
Filed:
Sep 30, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/894877
Inventors:
Srinidhi Varadarajan - Blacksburg VA, US
Joseph F. Ruscio - Santa Clara CA, US
Assignee:
Open Invention Network, LLC - Durham NC
International Classification:
G06F 11/00
US Classification:
714 15
Abstract:
Log-Based Rollback Recovery for system failures. The system includes a storage medium, and a component configured to transition through a series of states. The component is further configured to record in the storage medium the state of the component every time the component communicates with another component in the system, the system being configured to recover the most recent state recorded in the storage medium following a failure of the component.

Joseph Ruscio - Blacksburg VA, US
Assignee:
VIRGINIA TECH INTELLECTUAL PROPERTIES, INC. - Blacksburg VA

Method And Apparatus For Efficiently Merging, Storing And Retrieving Incremental Data

View page
US Patent:
20080222219, Sep 11, 2008
Filed:
Feb 20, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/034300
Inventors:
Srinidhi Varadarajan - Blacksburg VA, US
Assignee:
APPASSURE SOFTWARE, INC. - Great Falls VA
International Classification:
G06F 17/30
US Classification:
707204, 707E17005
Abstract:
In a method and apparatus for retrieving data from a snapshot data storage system, for each epoch, a snapshot including (i) all changed data, and (ii) an index is created. The index includes an entry for each page that has changed during the epoch. For rapidly retrieving the data as of any given time, the method creates a hash table that includes an entry for each data page that has changed since the baseline was created. The hash table entry indicates the epoch in which the data most recently changed and an offset corresponding to the location of the changed data in the corresponding snapshot. The hash table is created by inserting an entry for each page in the most recent index, and then examining the remaining indices for all other snapshots from the most recent to the oldest snapshot and adding any non-duplicate entries into the table.
