Universal Joint

View page
US Patent:
7025684, Apr 11, 2006
Filed:
May 28, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/447020
Inventors:
John C. Frana - Loves Park IL, US
James N. Olson - Rockford IL, US
Sean M. Carlini - Rockford IL, US
Assignee:
Aircraft Gear Corporation - Rockford IL
International Classification:
F16D 3/224
US Classification:
464145, 464906
Abstract:
A universal joint includes an inner race, an outer race, a ball cage, and balls positioned within windows of the ball cage. One end of the ball cage extends beyond the windows further than the other end of the ball cage.

High Performance Constant Velocity Universal Joint

View page
US Patent:
7229358, Jun 12, 2007
Filed:
Apr 21, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/111628
Inventors:
Sean M. Carlini - Rockford IL, US
John C. Frana - Loves Park IL, US
Assignee:
Rockford Acromatic Products Company - Loves Park IL
International Classification:
F16D 3/06
US Classification:
464173, 464906, 464145
Abstract:
A high performance constant velocity universal joint is based on a body which encloses the constant velocity joint components and provides a smooth spherical outer surface. A one-piece semi-rigid plastic boot in the form of a truncated sphere has a smooth internal spherical surface sized to match the outer surface of the body. The plastic of the boot is sufficiently elastic to allow the boot to snap over the body, yet sufficiently resilient to snap the open end closed after the boot is snapped over the body to provide a substantial seal preventing entry of debris under the seal. A retaining ring is positioned on the boot near the truncated end to resist plastic creep which would result in enlarging the opening and allowing debris to enter the seal.

Tool For Assembling A Constant Velocity Universal Joint

View page
US Patent:
58027050, Sep 8, 1998
Filed:
May 12, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/854596
Inventors:
Sean M. Carlini - Rockford IL
Assignee:
Aircraft Gear Corporation - Rockford IL
International Classification:
B21D 5310
B23P 1904
US Classification:
29724
Abstract:
A tool is provided for assembling cross groove constant velocity universal joints. The assembly tool comprises a cup having an open end and a base opposite the open end. The open end has an inwardly tapered rim. The dimension between the base and the rim is established to align tracks of the inner race of the universal joint with the rim. A ball cage is held in position surrounding the inner race, and balls are inserted on the rim, in the cage, and against the inner race so that they are adequately engaged in the inner race for assembly. When all of the balls are positioned in tracks of the inner race, and within the cage, an outer race is brought into position over the rim. The rim is tapered such that a sufficient periphery of the balls is exposed above the rim for engagement with tracks of the outer race. The assemblage is then inverted, allowing the inner race to drop into the outer race, carrying the balls along the tracks and the cage with the balls.

Spline Counting Mechanism

View page
US Patent:
54694825, Nov 21, 1995
Filed:
Sep 29, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/315071
Inventors:
Douglas Vandenberg - St. Charles IL
Michael L. Philpott - Champaign IL
Phillip A. Green - Crystal Lake IL
Scott A. Eastman - Urbana IL
Sean M. Carlini - Rockford IL
Assignee:
Aircraft Gear Corporation - Rockford IL
The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois - Urbana IL
International Classification:
G06M 102
G06M 1276
US Classification:
377 3
Abstract:
A spline counting mechanism for determining the number of splines on a shaft. The spline counting mechanism includes a plunger urged into engagement with the shaft and adapted to be rotated with respect to the shaft. The plunger is adapted to engage each spline on the shaft as the plunger is rotated through one revolution and is operable to establish and cut off electrical continuity in an electrical circuit as the plunger rotates into engagement with and then beyond each spline. The mechanism further includes a digital counter for counting and displaying the number of times that electrical continuity is established in the electrical circuit, this number being equal to the number of splines on the shaft.

Method And Means For Testing Cv Driveaxles

View page
US Patent:
55764967, Nov 19, 1996
Filed:
Oct 6, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/540547
Inventors:
Sean M. Carlini - Rockford IL
Lynn R. Smith - Machesney Park IL
Arthur J. Zangerle - Muskego WI
Douglas Vandenberg - St. Charles IL
Assignee:
Rockford Acromatic Products Co. - Rockford IL
International Classification:
G01M 116
US Classification:
73460
Abstract:
A test unit is provided for operatively testing CV driveaxles. The test unit has a drive spindle connected to a motor, and a pivotable brake spindle connected to a brake. An axle under test is connected with spindle adaptors to the drive and brake spindles. During a test, the axle under test is rotated by the motor, the brake is engaged to load the axle, and the brake spindle is pivoted to flex at least the outboard CV joints. The test unit is easily adaptable for testing different axles by using spindle adaptors. An accelerometer on the bearing block of the brake spindle detects vibration generated by the axle under test.
