Parking Location Identification

View page
US Patent:
20030112154, Jun 19, 2003
Filed:
Dec 18, 2001
Appl. No.:
10/025704
Inventors:
John H. Yoakum - Cary NC, US
Russell C. Coffin - Plano TX, US
Samuel H. Christie - Cary NC, US
International Classification:
G08G001/14
B60Q001/48
US Classification:
340/932200
Abstract:
The present invention provides for identifying available parking via a mobile terminal, such as a mobile telephone, personal digital assistant, or the like. A service provider is used to receive a request initiated by a mobile terminal to identify available parking, determine a location of the mobile terminal, and identify available parking based on the location of the mobile terminal. Upon identifying the available parking, parking information is then delivered to the mobile terminal for the mobile terminal's user to view or hear. The parking information can be accompanied by relevant maps, directions, and pricing information. A parking space reservation system can be incorporated to further extend the functionality.

Mobility In A Multi-Access Communication Network

View page
US Patent:
20050025163, Feb 3, 2005
Filed:
Jul 28, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/628167
Inventors:
Samuel Christie - Cary NC, US
Assignee:
NORTEL NETWORKS LIMITED - St. Laurent
International Classification:
H04Q007/24
US Classification:
370401000, 370338000
Abstract:
The present invention provides a terminal capable of establishing multiple communication sessions with a public network proxy through different access networks. The terminal actively communicates with the public network proxy to control which of the multiple communication paths are active, as well as control the transition from actively using one communication path to using another. The public network proxy facilitates data and voice sessions between the terminal and any number of other communication devices. In one embodiment, the communication sessions are reserved tunneling sessions, and the terminal cooperates with the public network proxy to effectively control how many tunneling sessions are established, how many tunneling sessions are active at any given time, and the transition from one tunneling session to another for active communications. Each of the communication or tunneling sessions may be established over different access networks using different communication technologies and protocols.

Audio Call Screening For Hosted Voicemail Systems

View page
US Patent:
20050025295, Feb 3, 2005
Filed:
Jul 28, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/628180
Inventors:
Samuel Christie - Cary NC, US
Assignee:
NORTEL NETWORKS LIMITED - St. Laurent
International Classification:
H04M001/64
US Classification:
379088190
Abstract:
The present invention allows a user to screen messages being left at a hosted voicemail system from a telephone terminal. Incoming calls intended for the telephone terminal are routed to the voicemail system immediately or after attempting to connect incoming call to the telephone terminal. As the caller is leaving a message at the voicemail system, a connection between the incoming call, voicemail system, and telephone terminal is established to allow the user to listen to the message and decide whether to take the call. The user may decide to take the call or let the caller finish leaving the message. In one embodiment, the telephone terminal is equipped to open only the speaker channel for monitoring the message and will provide a fully bi-directional connection if the user takes the call. The supporting switch and telephone terminal communicate with each other to facilitate the monitoring and taking of calls.

Enabling A Packet-Based Communication Client As A Mobile Terminal

View page
US Patent:
20060087991, Apr 27, 2006
Filed:
Oct 26, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/973173
Inventors:
Samuel Christie - Cary NC, US
Assignee:
NORTEL NETWORKS LIMITED - St. Laurent
International Classification:
H04B 7/00
US Classification:
370310000
Abstract:
The present invention provides a service node to facilitate the integration of cellular and packet networks. In particular, the service node acts as a proxy for packet-based communications over a packet network for a packet communication client, and also emulates a call routing entity associated with a cellular network. In select embodiments, the call routing entity emulated by the service node may be a visited mobile switching center, home mobile switching center, or a home location register. In operation, calls being processed in the cellular network may be processed in part by the service node, which is emulating a particular call routing entity. For calls involving the cellular network that are ultimately terminated on the packet network, the service node supports efficient call processing or handling, depending on the call routing entity being emulated.

Originator Disposition Options For Communications Session Termination

View page
US Patent:
63242656, Nov 27, 2001
Filed:
Jun 22, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/100886
Inventors:
Samuel H. Christie - Cary NC
Greg R. Utas - Irving TX
Steve J. McKinnon - Cary NC
David P. Ress - Cary NC
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
H04M 164
US Classification:
379 8823
Abstract:
An apparatus for providing a calling party with options for call termination treatments. The apparatus allows the called party to provide options which are presented to the calling party for a treatment when an attempted communications session is not successfully completed, and it provides the calling party with the selected treatment. Various types of treatments include receiving a recorded message, transferring to a voice mail system, transferring to a pager, or initiating another communications session.

Channel Transfer With Retrieve

View page
US Patent:
62691007, Jul 31, 2001
Filed:
Sep 11, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/151805
Inventors:
Samuel Henry Christie - Cary NC
Patrick J. Dagert - Raleigh NC
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - Montreal
International Classification:
H04J 302
US Classification:
370401
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for transferring a call leg in a telecommunication network and releasing it to free up resources, while allowing retrieval at a later time under specified conditions. Message extensions are provided for interfaces used between service nodes and host switches in a telecommunication networks. The invention is appropriate for use in an integrated services digital network (ISDN), in an internet protocol (IP) telephony network, or in any other type of telecommunication network. The service node sends a transfer request and retrieval conditions -to the switch. The switch stores the conditions and transfers the channel with the appropriate call leg, but can retrieve the call leg when one of the conditions is met.

System, Method, And Computer Program Product For Support Of Bearer Path Services In A Distributed Control Network

View page
US Patent:
6754180, Jun 22, 2004
Filed:
Dec 15, 1999
Appl. No.:
09/461884
Inventors:
Samuel H Christie - Cary NC
Assignee:
Nortel Networks Limited - St. Laurent
International Classification:
G01R 3108
US Classification:
370236, 370352, 370401, 379133, 709318
Abstract:
A packet data network call has both a call signaling path and a bearer path. The call signaling path handles call control data necessary to setup, connect and process a call. The bearer path is the actual voice data connection over which a conversation may take place. For many services the call signaling path must be able to tap into the bearer path in order to detect specific events. However, the bearer path may only be accessed at specific points by specific nodes. In some cases MGC B has no control over the call other than as a signaling bridge between MGC A and MGC C. The present invention provides the intermediate MGC B with H. 248 control reach through capability to a media gateway in the bearer path. One implementation is H. 248 based in which messaging is modified so that a call control message requests an H.
