Abstract:
A method for fabricating optical waveguides and other optical devices. Nitrogen ions are implanted by ion bombardment in a substrate composed of silicon dioxide. Damage to the atomic structure caused by the bombardment is removed by annealing to obtain a low-loss device. The chemical interaction of the nitrogen ions with the silicon dioxide creates an implanted region having an increased index of refraction, which implanted region retains the increased refractive index after annealing.

A single electrooptic crystalline material, having a first pair of electrodes affixed thereto along opposite faces, and a second set of electrodes affixed to alternate opposite faces, is disposed within a laser cavity. The orientation of the crystal and selection of electrode faces is such that the application of two different electric fields can achieve simultaneous mode-locking of the laser with output coupling of the optical pulses.

Abstract:
A plurality of photodetectors in a single line exposed to a field of view transversely across the complete region of a glow discharge volume. The detectors are connected in an electronic circuit to trigger a crowbar device across the power supply circuit providing the voltage producing the discharge when any one detector receives an optical input substantially greater than normal, thereby preventing damage to the discharge electrodes due to arcing across the glow discharge.
