Magnetic Transducer With Recessed Magnetic Elements

View page
US Patent:
6580586, Jun 17, 2003
Filed:
Nov 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/991601
Inventors:
Robert Glenn Biskeborn - Hollister CA
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G11B 5187
US Classification:
360319
Abstract:
A magnetic transducer with selected elements recessed from the surface of the transducer is disclosed. The magnetic sensor element is recessed below its surrounding gap material and the second shield (S ) is preferably recessed below the level of the gap material. Recessing the selected elements below the surrounding ceramic material, results in superior resistance to physical distortion resulting from the action of the moving magnetic media. Applicant discloses two methods for producing magnetic transducers with recessed elements according to the invention. One method uses a lapping medium which chemically etches the selected material more aggressively than the surrounding material resulting in the selected material being recessed from the surface of the transducer. For transducers in which the magnetic sensor element and the second (S ) are made from alloys of nickel and iron, an acidic lapping medium is preferred to achieve the desired structure. A second method for fabricating the transducer structure according to the invention uses sputter-etching.

Monolithic Magnetic Read-While-Write Head Apparatus And Method Of Manufacture

View page
US Patent:
6646830, Nov 11, 2003
Filed:
Jun 7, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/877382
Inventors:
Robert Glenn Biskeborn - Hollister CA
James Howard Eaton - Morgan Hill CA
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G11B 5127
US Classification:
360129, 360316
Abstract:
A multi-track magnetoresistive (MR) tape head with precisely-aligned read/write (R/W) track-pairs and a method for fabrication on a monolithic substrate wherein a plurality of tape heads are fabricated from a single substrate wafer by using complete thin-film processing on both sides of the wafer. The recording elements are aligned with readers opposite writers on the other side, providing a method for fabricating a multi-track thin-film magnetoresistive tape head with precisely-aligned R/W track-pairs fabricated on a monolithic substrate. As used herein, the term monolithic denominates an undivided seamless piece. The wafer is built using modified standard thin-film processes for fabricating direct access storage device (DASD) heads and modified substrate lapping procedures. The gap-to-gap separation within each R/W track-pair is reduced to nearly the thickness of the substrate wafer, which is significantly less than conventional separations known in the art. By fabricating on both sides of the wafer, hundreds or thousands of head elements may be aligned in one step while reducing the number of pieces in the completed head assembly.

Inventors:
Robert Glenn Biskeborn - Hollister CA
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G11B 1500
US Classification:
360 90, 36013021
Abstract:
A method for adjusting a tape wrap angle is described comprising the steps of operating the tape system to generate or regenerate an electrical signal in the head from the tape, either increasing or reducing the tape wrap angle as appropriate until a signal from the tape head reappears or goes to zero, then increasing the wrap angle until the desired angle is achieved as measured by the signal from the head or by moving the tape support a fixed amount. A tape recording and/or reading system with adjustable wrap angles is described which can be used with the method of the invention. The system includes one or more rollers mounted on an adjustable shaft with an eccentric or axially offset portion supporting the roller. Preferably for a two or multibump head an adjustable shaft and roller according to the invention are located on the tape-in and tape-out side of the tape head. The angular orientation of the eccentric shaft is adjustable, thereby, allowing precise adjustment of the position of the roller with respect to the tape head.

Method And Apparatus For The Manufacture Of Thin Film Magnetic Transducers Using A Compliant, Soft Lapping Process

View page
US Patent:
6712985, Mar 30, 2004
Filed:
Jul 3, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/898877
Inventors:
Robert Glenn Biskeborn - Hollister CA
Assignee:
Hitachi Global Storage Technologies
International Classification:
G11B 5127
US Classification:
216 22, 216 52, 216 53, 216 88, 216 89, 216 95, 2960315, 2960316
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for the manufacture of thin film magnetic transducers using a compliant pad or mat or surface in a lapping process is disclosed. The lapping process is applied to heads to eliminate both ductile element connections between the MR and shields and poletip and shield protrusion. A lapping media is dispensed onto an interface surface of a compliant pad. Then, the interface surface is engaged to the surface of a head outside a region comprising transducers defining a head gap. The pad is then moved over the head in a direction parallel to the head gap while using a head rail to guide the pad. The soft, compliant pad conforms to the head rail to ensure parallel movement. The pad is typically not stopped at the elements, but rather moves from one end of the head to the other to prevent bridging and damage that might occur during start/stop on the delicate elements. The lapping media contains a combination of chemical and mechanical agents, wherein the chemical etchants are specifically adjusted to give a desired head profile for the poletips. The chemical etchants are formed by adding dilute acid, for example, to the conventional lapping media used at the interface surface.

Tape Surface Constraint Of Lateral Transients

View page
US Patent:
6754033, Jun 22, 2004
Filed:
Aug 16, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/641134
Inventors:
Armando Jesus Argumedo - Tucson AZ
Robert Glenn Biskeborn - Hollister CA
Edwin Ralph Childers - Tucson AZ
James Howard Eaton - Morgan Hill CA
Assignee:
International Business Machines Corporation - Armonk NY
International Classification:
G11B 5584
US Classification:
360 7712, 360 71, 36013021
Abstract:
A tape movement constraint is provided for a tape drive system which moves a tape longitudinally along a tape path across a tape head, the tape having longitudinal tracks. The tape head has a track following servo system for moving the head laterally for following lateral movement of the tracks, where the tape is subject to lateral transient movement. A tape roller bearing closely adjacent the tape head is rotatable about a central axis parallel to the cylindrical peripheral surface, allowing the tape freedom of movement in the longitudinal direction. The tape roller bearing has a frictional cylindrical peripheral surface for contacting and engaging the surface of the tape and constraining movement of the tape in the lateral direction, thereby reducing the rate of the lateral transient movement of the tape to allow the track following servo system to follow the reduced rate lateral transient movement of the longitudinal tracks. Any potential air bearing that could form between the surface of the tape and the surface of the roller bearing is collapsed to insure that the roller bearing frictionally contacts and engages the surface of the tape.
