Detecting Transmission Line Impairments Using Reflectometry

View page
US Patent:
20160337512, Nov 17, 2016
Filed:
May 10, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/151373
Inventors:
- Fremont CA, US
Raghunath Kalavai - Bedminster NJ, US
International Classification:
H04M 3/30
Abstract:
Methods, systems, and devices are described for wired communication. In one aspect, a method relates to detecting cable impairments with reflectometry. The method includes transmitting a test signal and receiving one or more reflected signals in response to the test signal. The method also includes applying a first asymmetric windowing function to the one or more reflected signals to generate frequency domain data. Additionally, the method includes transforming the frequency domain data from a frequency-domain representation to a time-domain representation to generate a time domain reflectometry (TDR) signal. The method can detect and locate a bridge tap, line cut, and/or termination condition on the transmission line.

US Patent:
20160191118, Jun 30, 2016
Filed:
Dec 30, 2015
Appl. No.:
14/985265
Inventors:
- Fremont CA, US
Raghunath Kalavai - Bedminster NJ, US
International Classification:
H04B 3/46
H04M 3/22
H04M 3/30
Abstract:
Methods, systems, and devices are described for wired communication. In one aspect, a method relates to a scheme to filter and enhance a time domain reflectometry (TDR) plot with pre-processing such that the plot shows impairments clearly and reduces spurious peaks. The method includes receiving one or more reflected signals in response to a transmitted test signal. The method also includes determining a time domain reflectometry (TDR) signal based at least in part on frequency response data associated with the received one or more reflected signals. Additionally, the method includes applying a de-emphasis windowing function to the TDR signal.

Method And Apparatus For Detecting Improper Connections Near A Customer Premises Equipment

View page
US Patent:
20150030059, Jan 29, 2015
Filed:
Jul 25, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/341576
Inventors:
- Fremont CA, US
Raghunath KALAVAI - Bedminster NJ, US
International Classification:
H04L 1/24
H04M 11/06
US Classification:
375224
Abstract:
According to certain aspects, embodiments of the invention relate to methods and apparatuses to detect loss of connectivity due to improper connection near the CPE modem (i.e. small loop condition) based on the analysis of SELT. In embodiments, this condition is detected based on separately analyzing the location and levels of time domain signals associated with different transmission bands in an xDSL bandplan.

Method And Apparatus For Detecting And Locating Loop Impairments

View page
US Patent:
20150030138, Jan 29, 2015
Filed:
Jul 25, 2014
Appl. No.:
14/341538
Inventors:
- Fremont CA, US
Raghunath KALAVAI - Bedminster NJ, US
International Classification:
H04M 3/32
US Classification:
379 103
Abstract:
According to certain aspects, the present invention relates to methods and apparatuses to identify and locate a line-cuts in a loop that may or may not also contain bridgetaps. In embodiments, different bands of SELT signal data are analyzed separately using a TDR method, to effectively detect any potential bridgetaps. In these and other embodiments, by combining information from the separate bands, bridgetap locations and lengths are determined. Methodology is also established to distinguish legitimate line cut or bridgetap signal data from spurious data. According to certain aspects, embodiments of the invention also incorporate baselining, which includes tests to make sure that there are no inconsistencies or imperfections that can corrupt the SELT data.
