Skills:
Writing Experience: I wrote articles for the Northwest Indiana Entertainer Magazine. My job was to find locations around the area that had specific events that correlated with the theme of the magazine for the month. For example, I located Irish pubs that were holding St. Patrick's Day events that were notable in the area and, as a result, became something to write about. Unfortunately, due to the amount of papers that I had to write for school, to obtain my degree, I had to stop writing for this magazine and continue on with my studies in English. As a recent graduate, the majority of my experience in this field is from the extensive courses I completed in English Literature, Psychology, and education. The courses I took were all heavily based in composition. The assignments required the ability to gather information, analyze the information I was able to find, and make decisions and opinions on the information I obtained and be competent to write and communicate the subject in a clear and effective manner. I was required to make a point and back up the points I made by serious facts. I am very comfortable with switching between the MLA and APA styles of writing due to the fact that I was often assigned to write several papers for my English major and Psychology minor courses which required the use of both formats. In addition, in one of my courses, I also tutored English 104 students at Purdue in which I was responsible for helping and teaching the students to understand the methods of writing an academic paper in both styles. I also completed a semester of student teaching in a Junior and Senior high school English class in which my responsibility was to help the students learn how to complete a term paper from the beginning to the end. In this particular setting, I not only taught, but I learned. I realized all the quirks that come along with writing, and it was a good experience which propelled me into wanting to enhance my own skills as a writer. I found that a lot of their questions were questions that I still had to some degree and I went and figured out the answers. In conclusion, my qualifications lie in my ability to communicate effectively by what I have been taught and also what I feel I can just do. I am willing to always learn and teach and try to do both simultaneously. I believe it is always a process which requires consistent learning. I also feel that in writing it is important to have a passion about writing which I believe I have acquired.
