Enhanced Mobility Management At A Mobile Access Gateway

View page
US Patent:
8477685, Jul 2, 2013
Filed:
Jul 30, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/512594
Inventors:
Li Yan - Holmdel NJ, US
Assignee:
Avaya, Inc. - Basking Ridge NJ
International Classification:
H04W 4/00
H04W 36/00
H04J 3/06
H04L 12/56
US Classification:
370328, 370349, 370352, 370401, 709245, 4554351, 455436
Abstract:
A method is disclosed that enables the transmission of media and signaling packets in a Proxy Mobile Internet Protocol-based (PMIP-based) network. A mobile access gateway is enhanced to differentiate between different types of packet traffic and to act as a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) proxy on behalf of a mobile node. For example, the gateway is able to handle quality-of-service-sensitive (QoS-sensitive) traffic such as voice or video media packets differently from QoS-insensitive traffic such as SIP signaling packets. In the case of traffic packets that are not QoS-sensitive, the gateway engages standard PMIPv6 procedure. In the case of traffic packets that are in fact QoS-sensitive, the gateway acts as a SIP proxy for each mobile node attached to it, thereby avoiding tunneling of the packets between the gateway and the mobile node's local mobility anchor, and thereby reducing the amount of delay that affects the packets.

Coded Domain Picture Composition For Multimedia Communications Systems

View page
US Patent:
56297360, May 13, 1997
Filed:
Nov 1, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/332985
Inventors:
Barin G. Haskell - Tinton Falls NJ
Li Yan - Holmdel NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04N 712
H04N 1102
US Classification:
348387
Abstract:
Video composition techniques are disclosed for processing video information from a plurality of sources to provide a video image having a plurality of rectangular regions. Each rectangular region displays video information from a specific one of the plurality of video sources. The video information from each video source is in the form of an incoming digital bit stream. The digital bit stream from a first video source has a first bit rate, and the digital bit stream from a second video source has a second bit rate where the first bit rate may or may not be equal to the second bit rate. The incoming digital bit streams are fed to a rate matching circuit which converts all incoming digital bit streams to a common bit rate. The output of the rate matching circuit is fed to a synchronization arid multiplexer circuit which places video information from specific digital bit streams into corresponding rectangular regions of a composite video image.

System And Method For Filtering Video Signals

View page
US Patent:
54383749, Aug 1, 1995
Filed:
Dec 10, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/165271
Inventors:
Li Yan - Holmdel NJ
Assignee:
AT&T Corp. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04N 5213
US Classification:
348620
Abstract:
Motion video is represented by digital signals. The digital signals can be compressed by coding to reduce bitspace. Noise in the signal, however, reduces the efficiency of coding. The present invention is a system and method for reducing noise in video signals by filtering. The signal for the current frame is weightedly averaged with signals for a future and prior frame. The future and prior frames are given less weight as they differ more from the current frame. When motion compensation information is available, the motion compensated future and prior frames can be used for averaging, further improving filtering.

Adaptive Spatial-Temporal Postprocessing For Low Bit-Rate Coded Image Sequences

View page
US Patent:
55129560, Apr 30, 1996
Filed:
Feb 4, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/191685
Inventors:
Li Yan - Holmdel NJ
Assignee:
AT&T Corp. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04N 5213
US Classification:
348606
Abstract:
A 3D nonlinear postprocessing system and method are utilized to reduce coding artifacts produced by block-based motion-compensated transform coding. In the system and method, a separable 3D filtering structure is used: space-variant FIR-Median Hybrid filtering is used in spatial domain, followed by a motion-compensated nonlinear filtering in the temporal domain. By using this structure and method, the coding artifacts in a reconstructed image sequence can be effectively reduced without blurring edges or moving objects in the image sequence. Significant improvement in the picture quality of low bit-rate coded video sequences is thereby achieved.

Compressed-Domain Bit Rate Reduction System

View page
US Patent:
56233124, Apr 22, 1997
Filed:
Dec 22, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/361929
Inventors:
Li Yan - Holmdel NJ
Barin G. Haskell - Tinton Falls NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04N 718
US Classification:
348416
Abstract:
Improved bit rate reduction techniques are disclosed. When incorporated into an existing video processing system having a DCT coefficients processor, the motion vector processor disclosed herein provides enhanced computational and memory storage efficiencies over prior art designs. The motion vector processor includes a microprocessor and associated motion vector memory. The motion vector memory is adapted to store a plurality of motion vectors corresponding to at least one image frame containing a plurality of macro blocks. Each motion vector is represented by an X value and a Y value, the X value and the Y value signifying image changes within a given macro block from a given frame to the immediately preceding frame.

Motion Video Compression System With Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform Mismatch Control

View page
US Patent:
56045026, Feb 18, 1997
Filed:
Mar 21, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/215334
Inventors:
Barin G. Haskell - Tinton Falls NJ
Li Yan - Holmdel NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H03M 100
US Classification:
341200
Abstract:
A novel method and apparatus is disclosed for controlling inverse discrete cosine transform ("IDCT") mismatch between an encoder and decoder using different IDCT implementations under all coding conditions. Sychronization between the encoder and decoder is forced by selectively setting certain small DCT coefficients, which are prone to mismatch, to zero at the encoder. Advantageously, the invention may be implemented solely in the encoder to minimize system complexity and cost, and allow for IDCT mismatch control utilizing conventional decoders.

Video Transmission Rate Matching For Multimedia Communication Systems

View page
US Patent:
56870957, Nov 11, 1997
Filed:
Nov 1, 1994
Appl. No.:
8/332984
Inventors:
Barin Geoffry Haskell - Tinton Falls NJ
Li Yan - Holmdel NJ
Assignee:
Lucent Technologies Inc. - Murray Hill NJ
International Classification:
H04N 758
H04N 500
US Classification:
364514A
Abstract:
Digital video transmission rate matching techniques are disclosed. A bit stream rate matching apparatus includes a bit rate increasing device and a bit rate reducing device. The bit rate increasing device converts a video bit stream having a first transmission rate to a video bit stream having a second transmission rate wherein the first transmission rate is less than the second transmission rate. The bit rate reducing device converts a video bit stream having the second transmission rate to a video bit stream having the first transmission rate. The bit stream rate matching apparatus is useful in the context of a multimedia conference where a first endpoint device employs the first transmission rate and a second endpoint device employs the second transmission rate.
