Containment And Transportation Of Decommissioned Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessels

View page
US Patent:
6784444, Aug 31, 2004
Filed:
Jul 10, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/192382
Inventors:
Peter T. Tuite - Cortlandt Manor NY
Kevin T. Tuite - Cornwall NY
Albert A. Freitag - Washingtonville NY
Assignee:
WMG, Inc. - Peekskill NY
International Classification:
G21F 500
US Classification:
2505061, 588 16, 588 2, 588 3, 588 4, 588 15, 588249, 588252
Abstract:
Apparatus for containing, transporting, and storing or disposing of radioactive machinery, including decommissioned nuclear reactor pressure vessels. An improved, economically-produced container allows easier handling and packaging of machinery within plants where the machinery has been installed, and offers improved shock absorption and attenuation characteristics, especially when packaging is complete, through the provision, for example, of integral fenders. The invention also includes methods of making the container.

System And Method For Packaging A Nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel Head

View page
US Patent:
20060056569, Mar 16, 2006
Filed:
Apr 7, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/101210
Inventors:
Peter Tuite - Cortlandt Manor NY, US
Kevin Tuite - Cornwall NY, US
Albert Freitag - Middletown NY, US
International Classification:
G21C 19/00
US Classification:
376272000
Abstract:
A universal modular container for containing, transporting, storing, or disposing of reactor pressure vessel heads (RPVHs) with attached control rod driving mechanisms has several sections that may be handled independently and thus allow easier handling of the container and packaging of the RPVHs. Various ring sections of different lengths may be used, to allow the container to have dimensions that are the best match for enclosing any particular intact reactor pressure vessel head with attached control rod driving mechanisms. The RPVH with attached CRDMs can be placed onto and attached to a bottom plate of the container, items can be removed from the reactor pressure vessel head, and then the ring sections attached to the bottom plate. The container is closed with a top plate, and the complete package is ready to be transported for storage or disposal in accordance with regulations for radioactive materials.

US Patent:
6617484, Sep 9, 2003
Filed:
Apr 18, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/552460
Inventors:
Peter T. Tuite - Cortlandt Manor NY
Kevin T. Tuite - Cornwall NY
Albert A. Freitag - Washingtonville NY
Assignee:
WMG, Inc. - Peekskill NY
International Classification:
G21F 900
US Classification:
588 16, 2505061, 588 2, 588 3, 588 4, 588 15, 588249, 588252
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for containing, transporting, and storing or disposing of radioactive machinery, including decommissioned nuclear reactor pressure vessels. An improved, economically-produced container is provided which allows easier handling and packaging of machinery within plants where the machinery has been installed, and which provides improved shock absorption and attenuation characteristics, especially when packaging is complete. A reactor pressure vessel or similar item is disconnected from the remainder of the plant and external fittings are trimmed as close to flush with items exterior as practicable. A storage and containment canister, optionally cut into at least two sections to ease handling and packaging, is placed nearby. The pressure vessel head or any other low-radioactive items are removed, and insulation and other items removed from the outside of the item are placed inside the items body. The item body is placed into a lower section of the canister and sealed, and detached canister sections are reattached.
