Self-Fastening Electrical Connector

View page
US Patent:
43602428, Nov 23, 1982
Filed:
Aug 10, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/291682
Inventors:
John M. Poliak - East Meadow NY
Juan M. Lopez - Jamaica NY
Assignee:
Leviton Manufacturing Co., Inc. - Little Neck NY
International Classification:
H01R 1120
H01R 1338
US Classification:
339 99R
Abstract:
A self-fastening electrical connector suitable for connecting an appliance to a standard AC wall receptacle has prongs pivotally mounted on a moulded body in which there is a channel adapted to receive one end of an insulated wire, the other end of which may be connected to an electrical appliance. The prongs have inwardly directed projections adapted to pierce the insulation of the wires in the channel when the prongs are urged from an open to a closed position and outwardly extending projections adapted to engage complementary notches in a plug housing. The moulded body has additional projections which engage additional notches in the plug housing, when the body and contact prongs are inserted therein, simultaneously to prevent retraction of the assembly formed by the contact prongs and moulded body from the housing. An accessway for a tool is provided through the housing wall adjacent an aperture through which the wire extends to the appliance to permit a tool to be inserted and rotated about a fulcrum also provided in the plug housing to urge the contact and body assembly out of the plug housing.

Positive Retention Electrical Connector

US Patent:
50839381, Jan 28, 1992
Filed:
Jun 14, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/715942
Inventors:
John M. Poliak - East Meadow NY
Assignee:
Leviton Manufacturing Co. Inc. - Little Neck NY
International Classification:
H01R 1358
US Classification:
439460
Abstract:
A connector for conductively connecting a wire to a receptacle. The connector includes a hollow body having an axial bore for receiving the wire in an axial position and a housing adapted to be received in the body. Fingers on the housing urge the fingers against the wire radially inwards against shoulders on the body to axially position the wire as the housing is inserted into the body. Included is a system for connecting each of the three conductors of the stripped wire with the electrical prongs of the connector. The system includes brackets slidably mounted with the connector proximate to the prongs and which form cavities for receiving the conductors and screws for moving the brackets towards the prongs to capture the conductors in the cavities.

Wiring Device System With Single Screw Subassembly

View page
US Patent:
46342117, Jan 6, 1987
Filed:
Sep 30, 1982
Appl. No.:
6/430631
Inventors:
John M. Poliak - East Meadow NY
Juan M. Lopez - Jamaica NY
Robert W. Gritz - Little Neck NY
Assignee:
Leviton Manufacturing Company, Inc. - Little Neck NY
International Classification:
H01R 3372
US Classification:
339196M
Abstract:
The present invention teaches a novel device that electrically connects conductors from a cable to the electrical contacts of a plug or receptacle by means of a single fastener. The device comprises a shell, and an assembly carried by the shell. The assembly is capable of mating engagement with other electrical contacts and has receiving means for receiving electrical conductors. A single fastener holds the terminals of the conductors in electrical connection with the electrical contacts. The single fastener includes a movable carriage on which is mounted a nut through which a screw is threaded with a head with a flange that is engaged with the wall of the assembly so that when the screw is rotated, the carriage moves so as to decrease or enlarge a chamber in which the conductor terminals and a portion of the electrical contacts are situated.

Twist-Type Electrical Connector With Safety Interlock

View page
US Patent:
39457028, Mar 23, 1976
Filed:
Oct 15, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/514554
Inventors:
John M. Poliak - East Meadow NY
Juan M. Lopez - New York NY
Assignee:
Leviton Manufacturing Co., Inc. - Little Neck NY
International Classification:
H01R 1354
US Classification:
339 88R
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a twist-type electrical connector having an improved interlock. In the connector, a plug and a receptacle are rotated angularly relative to each other to bring electrical contacts into engagement and to prevent accidental separation of the plug and receptacle. Entrance slots in the receptacle receive the male blades and carry detents which engage with a rear edge of at least one of the male blades and hold the blade in its seated or rotated position. The detents also provide an indication as to when proper connections have been established and also, prevent accidental counterrotation of the contacts.
