For another embodiment, an apparatus is described that includes a controller coupled to a control plane of an optical network to receive a signaling message on a control plane, the signaling message specifying a change in a connection for a specified optical network communications circuit, and to forward the signaling message on the control plane, and an interface to an optical switching matrix to change the connection for the specified circuit after forwarding the signaling message.

Routers balance network traffic among multiple paths through a network according to an amount of bandwidth that can be sent on an outgoing interface computed for each of the paths. For example, a router receives a link bandwidth for network links that are positioned between the first router and a second router of the network, and selects a plurality of forwarding paths from the first router to the second router. Upon determining that one of the network links is shared by multiple of the plurality of forwarding paths, the router computes a path bandwidth for each of the plurality of forwarding paths so as to account for splitting of link bandwidth of the shared network link across the multiple forwarding paths that share the network link. The router assigns packet flows to the forwarding paths based at least on the computed amount of bandwidth for each of the forwarding paths.

Techniques are described for providing fast reroute for traffic in EVPN-VXLAN. For example, a backup PE device of an Ethernet segment is configured with an additional tunnel endpoint address (“reroute tunnel endpoint address”) for a backup path associated with a second split-horizon group that is different than a tunnel endpoint address and first split-horizon group for another path used for normal traffic forwarding. The backup PE device sends the reroute tunnel endpoint address to a primary PE device of the Ethernet segment, which uses the reroute tunnel endpoint address to configure a backup path to the backup PE device over the core network. For example, the primary PE device may install the reroute tunnel endpoint address within its forwarding plane and one or more operations to cause the primary PE device to encapsulate a VXLAN header including the reroute tunnel endpoint address when rerouting the packet along the backup path.
