Method For The Production Of Polyestercarbonates

View page
US Patent:
20040014934, Jan 22, 2004
Filed:
Jul 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/199643
Inventors:
Herman Krabbenhoft - Scotia NY, US
Mohan Amaratunga - Clifton Park NY, US
David Mobley - Niskayuna NY, US
Assignee:
General Electric Company
International Classification:
C08G064/00
US Classification:
528/370000, 528/372000
Abstract:
A method for the production of a polyestercarbonate comprises (i) providing at least one dihydroxyaromatic compound (ii) providing a carbonate precursor and (iii) providing at least one solid, biosynthetically derived, aliphatic alpha-omega dicarboxylic acid having about 10 to about 22 carbon atoms and having a nitrogen content of not more than about 55 ppm, and reacting interfacially in the presence of a base said dihydroxyaromatic compound, said carbonate precursor and said dicarboxylic acid.

Polyestercarbonates Which Exhibit Improved Processibility

View page
US Patent:
59590645, Sep 28, 1999
Filed:
Jul 6, 1998
Appl. No.:
9/110277
Inventors:
Herman Otto Krabbenhoft - Scotia NY
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
C08G 6400
US Classification:
528196
Abstract:
The invention relates to a polyestercarbonate polymer which comprises repeating units of a mono-unsaturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid having about 12 to about 20 carbon atoms. Preferred dicarboxylic acids for incorporation into the polymer are cis-octadec-9-enedioic acid or trans-octadec-9-enedioic acid. The use of these mono-unsaturated acids results in polymers with lower glass transition temperatures, and enhances processibility.

Conversion Of Cyclic Polycarbonate Oligomers To Linear Polycarbonates Initiated By Phosphine-Disulfide Product Or Precursor Thereof

View page
US Patent:
52122840, May 18, 1993
Filed:
Jan 27, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/826503
Inventors:
Herman O. Krabbenhoft - Scotia NY
Daniel J. Brunelle - Scotia NY
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
C08G 6420
US Classification:
528371
Abstract:
Cyclic polycarbonate oligomers are polymerized to linear polycarbonates by the action of a salt prepared by the reaction of a triarylphosphine or triaryl phosphite with an organic disulfide, preferably an aryl disulfide. The reactants which form the salt may be incorporated in the cyclic polycarbonate composition, and interreact when the composition is heated to form the active initiating species.

57798109, Jul 14, 1998
Filed:
Jul 1, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/673484
Inventors:
Jimmy Lynn Webb - Ballston Lake NY
Herman Otto Krabbenhoft - Scotia NY
David Gilles Gascoyne - Schenectady NY
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
B08B 300
US Classification:
134 3
Abstract:
A method is disclosed for the removal of halogenated organic contaminants from particulate material by admixing a monocarboxylic acid with the particulate material, and passing a vapor phase of steam through the material to substantially remove the halogenated organic contaminant.

Solvent Resistant Polycarbonate Compositions

US Patent:
51624591, Nov 10, 1992
Filed:
Sep 7, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/578373

Herman O. Krabbenhoft - Scotia NY
Eric J. Pearce - Maryland NY
Assignee:
General Electric Company - Schenectady NY
International Classification:
C08L 6900
US Classification:
525462
Abstract:
Polymeric compositions are described which result from blending a mixture comprising: (A) at least one amorphous polycarbonate; (B) at least one cyclic polycarbonate oligomer containing hydroquinone carbonate structural units; and (C) at least one polycarbonate formation catalyst. The polymeric compositions have particular application in the preparation of shaped articles for use in environments characterized by the presence of solvents, solvent vapors, and/or potential for fire conditions. Methods for increasing the solvent and flammability resistance of amorphous polycarbonates are also described.
