Current Sensor Responsive To Symmetrical And Asymmetrical Currents And Current Limiting Protector Utilizing Same

View page
US Patent:
44438540, Apr 17, 1984
Filed:
Jun 8, 1981
Appl. No.:
6/271580
Inventors:
Herbert M. Pflanz - Westwood MA
Albert B. Lester - Westwood MA
Assignee:
Electric Power Research Institute, Inc. - Palo Alto CA
International Classification:
H02H 326
US Classification:
364483
Abstract:
A current limiting protector for use in electric power transmission lines includes a conductive strip of material and a chemical charge for physically interrupting the conductive strip in response to a fault current. A current sensor triggers the chemical charge when the line current is symmetrical and the RMS value of the line current exceeds a first value, and the current sensor triggers the chemical charge when the line current is asymmetrical and the RMS value of line current exceeds a second value.

Vacuum Switch With Integrated Capacitor Shield

View page
US Patent:
39536939, Apr 27, 1976
Filed:
Sep 9, 1974
Appl. No.:
5/504335
Inventors:
Herbert M. Pflanz - Westwood MA
Assignee:
Allis-Chalmers Corporation - Milwaukee WI
International Classification:
H01H 3366
US Classification:
200144B
Abstract:
A vacuum switch with integrated capacitor shield comprising an evacuated insulating envelope provided with metallic end cap closures through which relative movable contact rods extend; the evacuated envelope encloses a plurality of shields which also serve as capacitor vanes permanently fixed to another shield and the stationary contact.

Passively Detonated Explosively-Assisted Fuse

View page
US Patent:
45381330, Aug 27, 1985
Filed:
Dec 19, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/562827
Inventors:
Herbert M. Pflanz - Westwood MA
Assignee:
Phoenix Electric Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
H01H 8500
H01H 3776
US Classification:
337 4
Abstract:
An explosively-assisted fuse is passively triggered (without electronics) by means of an auxiliary fuse in series with the main conductor. The auxiliary fuse provides a detonating voltage across a gap formed therein on melting in response to a fault current. The auxiliary fuse is configured to facilitate sizing for a variety of current loads with a standard fuse configuration.

Pyrotechnically-Assisted Current Interrupter

View page
US Patent:
49204467, Apr 24, 1990
Filed:
Sep 27, 1988
Appl. No.:
7/252014
Inventors:
Herbert M. Pflanz - Westwood MA
Assignee:
G & W Electric Co. - Blue Island IL
International Classification:
H02H 300
H01H 3776
US Classification:
361 93
Abstract:
A current interrupter wherein current is normally carried by a bus bar, and a portion of the bus bar is segmented by a pyrotechnic charge under excess current conditions. The charge is detonated by a detonator which is triggered by voltage across a resistive element in series with the bus bar. At the time the detonator is triggered, the resistive element provides sufficient resistance to trigger the detonator while operating at a temperature below its melting point. A control device may be employed to control current flow through the detonator.
