Abstract:
An apparatus for calibrating a printer of a photofinishing system includes a reference film strip carrying at least one reference image; a reference chart carrying multiple renderings of the reference image representing different printer exposures; and a substrate carrying printer correction factors needed to change a photographic print obtained from the reference image on the reference film strip, to match any desired rendering on the reference chart. A method of producing the above reference chart, and a method of calibrating a printer of a photofinishing system, are also provided.

Abstract:
A method and system for controlling color output includes receiving a document containing a color image, producing a first output copy of the document using a first color processing path, receiving at least one natural language request to adjust the color output of the device, adjusting the color output of the device, and producing a second output copy of the document. The method and system further includes presenting natural language descriptions of the effects of color processing paths with or without sample palettes to the user either to solicit a suggestion from the user or present the user with choices based upon the natural language request received.

Abstract:
A method of restoring a color image comprised of one or more colorants and which image may have faded over time, which image is represented by an image signal. The method uses both a restoration model and provides a means which enable a user to readily interact with the restoration process to obtain a final restoration. In a second aspect, the restoration model is used in conjunction with a lightness distribution mapping to provide a high quality restoration. The restoration model is a function of a variable time, and is the inverse of a model representing the fade rate of at least one of the colorants as a function of at least a variable time (and preferably also as a function of the other colorants). An apparatus for performing the method is provided. A computer readable medium has computer readable code means which can execute the method in a suitable computer.

A method for representing a digital image having color values with an extended color gamut in a storage color space having a limited color gamut comprising the steps of: adjusting the color values of the extended color gamut digital image to fit within the limited color gamut to form a limited color gamut digital image; representing the limited color gamut digital image in the storage color space; determining a clipped limited color gamut digital image in which highly quantized regions in the limited color gamut digital image have been clipped; determining a residual image representing a difference between the extended color gamut digital image and the clipped limited color gamut digital image; and associating the residual image with the limited color gamut digital image in the storage color space such that the associated residual image and the limited color gamut digital image in the storage color space are adapted to be used to form a reconstructed extended color gamut digital image.

Abstract:
A computer program product and method for calibrating and characterizing a color display perform calibrating and characterizing steps. A light source is operated in order to emit light from one or more light emitters on the light source. A color capture device, e.g., a digital camera, is calibrated and characterized based on the emitted light. Then, color images are displayed on the color display and captured on the color capture device. The color display is calibrated and characterized based on the captured color images. Computer program instructions are recorded on the computer readable medium, and are executable by a processor, for performing the calibrating and characterizing steps. A method for generating a controlled light source includes displaying light source selections to a user and receiving a user light source selection. Selected light emitters produce a light output matching the user light source selection.

Abstract:
This presently described embodiment deals with this problem by dynamically constructing color management device profiles that are optimized for accurate reproduction of a particular document. This apparatus utilizes three components. Device characterization data describes the relationship between device drive values (e.g., CMYK in the case of a 4 color printer) and the resulting color (spectral, CIELab, CIEXYZ or similar). Critical document colors are the critical colors in a document that is to be output on the device. The colors will generally be described by their CIELab, CIEXYZ or similar coordinates, but may also include color tolerances and frequency of occurrence values. Device modeling algorithms are mathematical procedures that allow the construction of device-to-color and color-to-device models in a way that different accuracy weightings can be applied in different regions of color space. These components function together to build a device profile in which the errors in the critical document colors are minimized.

Abstract:
A natural language color control system. The system includes a dictionary of ordinary language color terms, a working color space, wherein every portion of the working color space is mapped to at least one term in the color term dictionary, and an ordinary language command lexicon and syntax for use with the ordinary language color terms that correspond to transformations in the working color space. The dictionary of color terms may be created or chosen from pre-existing dictionaries. This system could be used to adjust colors in images as well as the meaning of verbally-defined color terms such as for searching a database.
