Method For Continuously Processing Electronic Messages Throughout A Transition Between Online And Offline States

View page
US Patent:
6954782, Oct 11, 2005
Filed:
Aug 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/223831
Inventors:
Scott A. Thurlow - Kirkland WA, US
David A. Raissipour - Bellevue WA, US
Stephen T. Wells - Seattle WA, US
Robert M. Price - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F015/16
US Classification:
709206, 709217, 709219
Abstract:
An electronic mail (e-mail) application program includes a configurable, e-mail messaging feature for automatically responding to a portable computer's transition between online and offline states. The e-mail application program determines the state of a connection between a portable computer and an electronic mail server and processes electronic messages in accordance with the appropriate state. The portable computer's transition between an online state and an offline state triggers a user-configurable response, designed to permit the continuation of electronic mail message processing in a manner that accommodates the state change. The e-mail application program responds to such a transition by automatically switching between online and offline modes of operation. The e-mail application program can also respond to such a transition by establishing a secondary connection to a mail server when a primary connection is rendered inoperative. A user may configure various aspects of the invention to respond to a transition in a way that accommodates the user's hardware and/or software requirements.

Method And Apparatus For Record Synchronization With Conflict Resolution

View page
US Patent:
7509352, Mar 24, 2009
Filed:
Jun 30, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/610268
Inventors:
Aaron J. Hartwell - Duvall WA, US
Brian Trenbeath - Redmond WA, US
David Raissipour - Issaquah WA, US
Ronald Eric Gray - Redmond WA, US
Kendall D. Keil - Bothell WA, US
Stephen T. Wells - Seattle WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
G06F 12/00
G06F 17/30
US Classification:
707203, 707200
Abstract:
A method and apparatus are provided for synchronizing records stored at a first computer with records stored at a second computer. If properties of the first record have been modified, a determination is made as to whether all of the modified properties may be ignored. If all of the properties are not ignorable, a determination is made as to whether the values of all non-ignorable properties are identical between the first and second records. If the values are identical, the modifications to the properties of the first record are discarded. If the values are not identical, a determination is made as to whether the modified properties are decidable. If the properties are decidable, a value is selected from either the value stored in the first record or the second record, and utilized as the selected value of the modified property for the first and second records.

Providing Online Connectivity Across A Range Of Electronic Communications Systems

View page
US Patent:
7532571, May 12, 2009
Filed:
Jun 27, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/608944
Inventors:
Michael Price - San Diego CA, US
Alec Dun - Redmond WA, US
Gulsen Demiroz - Redmond WA, US
Ronald Eric Gray - Redmond WA, US
David Raissipour - Issaquah WA, US
Aaron Hartwell - Duvall WA, US
Assignee:
Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
International Classification:
H04L 12/26
US Classification:
370225, 370392, 379 9335, 709239
Abstract:
Methods and systems allow an application capable of online communication to monitor the availability of different electronic communications sources and provide transition between online and offline operation and between different electronic communications sources. When a change occurs in connectivity source status, such as when the user disconnects from a wireline connection or goes offline or when a connection is otherwise lost due to mechanical failure or loss of wireline or wireless signal or when a reduction in bandwidth or connection speed is detected, the application is automatically transitioned between online and offline status and between different types of connectivity source without user action and without interruption of use of the application. If an online connection may not be obtained via TCP/IP connection, a determination is made as to whether the application and computer operating system are configured for RPC/HTTP connectivity. If the application and computer operating system are configured for RPC/HTTP connectivity, RPC/HTTP connection is attempted.

Systems And Methods For Aggregation Of Cloud Storage

View page
US Patent:
20210112114, Apr 15, 2021
Filed:
Dec 21, 2020
Appl. No.:
17/128541
Inventors:
- Boston MA, US
David Raissipour - Westborough MA, US
International Classification:
H04L 29/08
H04L 12/26
G06F 16/10
G06F 16/178
G06F 16/182
Abstract:
The present disclosure describes systems and methods for aggregation and management of cloud storage among a plurality of providers. In a first aspect, the invention is directed to file distribution and management across multiple cloud services via a storage manager. The storage manager may aggregate third-party cloud storage provider accounts into a single cloud storage space and load balance files among the third party-accounts as necessary. In one implementation, the storage manager may act as an intermediary, and files may be transferred by the client to the storage manager, which may select and forward the files to a third-party storage provider. File retrieval may be performed similarly, with the client requesting a file from the intermediary storage manager, which may retrieve the file from the corresponding third-party storage provider and forward the file to the client device.

Aggregation And Management Among A Plurality Of Storage Providers

View page
US Patent:
20210075857, Mar 11, 2021
Filed:
Nov 19, 2020
Appl. No.:
16/952751
Inventors:
- Boston MA, US
David Raissipour - Westborough MA, US
International Classification:
H04L 29/08
H04L 29/06
G06F 21/62
G06F 16/27
G06F 16/17
Abstract:
The present disclosure describes systems and methods for aggregation and management of cloud storage among a plurality of providers via file fragmenting to provide increased reliability and security. In one implementation, fragments or blocks may be distributed among a plurality of cloud storage providers, such that no provider retains a complete copy of a file. Accordingly, even if an individual service is compromised, a malicious actor cannot access the data. In another implementation, file fragmenting may be performed in a non-standard method such that file headers and metadata are divided across separate fragments, obfuscating the original file metadata.

Systems And Methods For Third-Party Policy-Based File Distribution In An Aggregation Of Cloud Storage Services

View page
US Patent:
20190306240, Oct 3, 2019
Filed:
Jun 18, 2019
Appl. No.:
16/444178
Inventors:
- Boston MA, US
David Raissipour - Westborough MA, US
Assignee:
Carbonite, Inc. - Boston MA
International Classification:
H04L 29/08
Abstract:
The present disclosure describes systems and methods for aggregation and management of cloud storage to leverage third-party storage policies. Some cloud storage providers may allow users to store some types of files for free, without counting the files against a storage quota or limit, such as photos. Other providers may allow users to store music files, and may automatically replace lower quality recordings with high quality versions (improving quality for the user while performing deduplication and storage mitigation by the server). These policies may be utilized by a storage manager to direct corresponding types of files to specific storage providers to take advantage of free storage or further processing. The files may be excluded from load balancing algorithms, such that storage quotas are not unbalanced as a result of policies of one provider.
