Abstract:
A method and a device for counting the number of sleep disordered breathing events experienced by a subject within a specified time period. Such a counter comprises: (1) an oxygen saturation level sensor for location at a prescribed site on the subject, (2) an oximetry conditioning and control module that controls the operation of the sensor and converts its output data to oxygen saturation level data, (3) a miniature monitoring unit having a microprocessor, a memory device, a timer for use in time-stamping data, a display means and a recall switch, and (4) firmware for the unit that directs: (i) the sampling and temporary storage of the oxygen saturation level data, (ii) the unit to analyze using a specified method the temporarily stored data to identify and count the occurrence of the subjects disordered breathing events, and to store the time of occurrence of each of these events, and (iii) the display means to display specified information pertaining to the counts in response to the actuation of the recall switch.

Abstract:
A method and an apparatus are disclosed for scoring the quality of sleep experienced by a subject wearing the apparatus for a specified period. This sleep monitoring apparatus includes a motion sensor that quantifies the temporal variation in the subject's motion, an analog to digital converter to sample the sensor data, a microprocessor with embedded programmable memory to store control and processing firmware, a memory device for data storage, a display means, and a switch for staring and resetting the device. The firmware for this apparatus: (i) directs the microprocessor to sample sensor output at a prescribed time interval and to temporarily store this data in the memory device, (ii) directs the microprocessor to analyze the temporarily stored data to compute a sleep score based on the magnitude of movements recorded during the monitoring period, and (iii) controls the operation of the display means. Upon termination of the sleep period, the apparatus' display means will display a sleep score based on a scale of 0 to 100. A high score indicates restful sleep (very low movements), while a low score indicates excessive restlessness during the monitored sleep period.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus are disclosed for monitoring and assessing the occurrences of a person's snoring activity. Being small and portable, the apparatus is easily attached to a subject and detects and quantifies the subject's snoring behavior. It automatically provides an immediate display of the average number of snores per hour (i.e., a “snore index”) and an indication of the sound intensity of these snores, which are measures of the subject's snoring activity. In a preferred embodiment, this apparatus includes: (a) a sensor to capture the temporal variation of a subject's snoring activity, (b) an analog to digital converter to sample and digitize the captured data, (c) a microprocessor to process the digital data and control the apparatus' operation, (d) a memory device for data storage, (e) a display means, and (f) an embedded firmware program that controls the: (i) sampling and storage of the data, (ii) analysis of the data to compute the average number of snores per hour and their intensity, and (iii) the operation of the display means and the possible downloading of the data.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and a device for evaluating a fully ambulatory subject for sleep apnea. In a preferred embodiment, this method is seen to comprise the steps of (1) locating on the subject's upper lip an airflow sensor that is connected with a miniature, recording unit which has: (a) signal conditioning and filtering circuitry to yield required levels of airflow sensor signal fidelity, (b) a programmable controller having an analog to digital converter, an integrated recorder, a data display means, and firmware that analyzes the airflow sensor signal, (c) a mini jack connected to the recorder that connects with a smart cable to control data flow between the recorder and an external computer (2) using this unit to sample at prescribed time intervals the sensor data which effectively quantifies the temporal variation of the subject's inspiration and expiration airflow, (3) time stamping and storing this sampled data in the integrated recorder, (4) using the firmware to identify, count and cause the display of the number of apnea events identified as occurring per a specified period of time, and (5) using an external computer with application software to analyze and display the data for further evaluation of sleep apnea events.

Abstract:
The present invention provides apparatus and methods for monitoring and recording the position and extent of motion of the body of a human or a lower animal. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, it comprises: (1) a three-dimensional-position monitoring, mercury sensor, (2) a programmable control unit that receives as input the output from the sensor and has the capability to sufficiently interpret said input so as to determine the position and related movements with respect to gravity of the measurement site at which said sensor is located on its user's body, (3) a storage device, operable by said control unit, that stores time-stamped, data regarding the user's body position and related movements, and (4) an interface device that has the capability of transferring the stored data to an external computer. The present invention for ambulatory recording eliminates the requirement that such monitors be connected through cables to external data storage and processing devices, thereby often effectively dictating that such monitoring activities be conducted in clinical laboratories.

A method and apparatus for accurate and convenient feedback to a user concerning activity level performance. Features of the invention include visual and audible outputs indicating a current level of activity. Another feature includes varying the rate of an audible tone output to reflect an actual and current activity level. Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and apparatus for diagnosing of the medical condition of a fully ambulatory subject who exhibits temporal variations in various physiological parameters as a result of the subject's medical condition. The method comprises the steps of (1) locating a separate, self-contained, recording unit on a plurality of selected measurement sites of the subject, (2) using these units to collect sensor output data, (3) sampling this sensor output data at prescribed time intervals, (4) time stamping and storing this sampled data in recording, (5) transferring this data via a smart input/output interface device to an external computer, and (6) using the external computer with appropriate application software to analyze and diagnose the medical condition of the subject. A system of recording units is disclosed for an embodiment of the present invention directed at diagnosing subjects exhibiting sleep disorders.
