Identification Of Optical Ribbons

View page
US Patent:
6731844, May 4, 2004
Filed:
Jun 21, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/886559
Inventors:
Craig M. Conrad - Hickory NC
David W. Chiasson - Hickory NC
Assignee:
Corning Cable Systems LLC - Hickory NC
International Classification:
G02B 644
US Classification:
385114, 439488
Abstract:
In a fiber optic cable having a plurality of optical ribbons, identifying information about each optical ribbon is conveyed by a series of colored regions of different colors visible on an outer surface of the optical ribbon matrix covering. In preferred embodiments of the present invention, the colored regions are formed in such a way that they do not cause microbending or the like. Preferably, the colored regions are formed during the process of extruding the matrix covering over the fibers, by injecting colored material into the extrusion die.

Optical Fiber Ribbons Having A Non-Uniform Thickness And/Or Preferential Tear Portions

View page
US Patent:
6748148, Jun 8, 2004
Filed:
May 31, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/159730
Inventors:
David W. Chiasson - Hickory NC
Rodney D. Cline - Hickory NC
Shail K. Moorjani - Conover NC
Julie A. Chalk - Hickory NC
Assignee:
Corning Cable Systems LLC - Hickory NC
International Classification:
G02B 644
US Classification:
385114
Abstract:
A fiber optic ribbon includes a plurality of optical fibers arranged in a generally planar configuration having a primary matrix generally contacting optical fibers along a longitudinal axis forming an elongate structure. In one embodiment, the primary matrix has a cross-section with a non-uniform thickness, for example, an end portion with a generally bulbous shape. The fiber optic ribbon is useful as a subunit having a secondary matrix in contact therewith. The secondary matrix has a non-uniform thickness, thereby providing a fiber optic ribbon with preferential tear portions to aid separation of the ribbon into subunits. Other embodiments include a fiber optic ribbon with subunits having a secondary matrix with recessed portions to aid in the separation of the subunits.

Optical Fiber Ribbons Having A Preferential Separation Sequence

View page
US Patent:
6792184, Sep 14, 2004
Filed:
Apr 10, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/411406
Inventors:
Craig M. Conrad - Hickory NC
David W. Chiasson - Hickory NC
Bradley J. Blazer - Granite Falls NC
Eric R. Logan - Hickory NC
Assignee:
Corning Cable Systems LLC - Hickory NC
International Classification:
G02B 644
US Classification:
385114
Abstract:
A fiber optic ribbon having a predetermined separation sequence including a first subunit having a plurality of optical fibers arranged in a generally planar configuration being connected by a first primary matrix. The first subunit being a portion of a first ribbon-unit. A second subunit having a plurality of optical fibers arranged in a generally planar configuration being connected by a second primary matrix. The second subunit being a portion of a second ribbon-unit that includes a plurality of subunits. A secondary matrix connects the first ribbon-unit and the second ribbon-unit. The secondary matrix has a preferential tear portion disposed adjacent to a ribbon-unit interface defined between the first ribbon-unit and the second ribbon-unit.

Optical Fiber Ribbons Having Preferential Tear Portions

US Patent:
6853783, Feb 8, 2005
Filed:
Feb 28, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/376786
Inventors:
David W. Chiasson - Hickory NC, US
Craig M. Conrad - Hickory NC, US
Karen E. Williams - Hickory NC, US
Rodney D. Cline - Hickory NC, US
Terry L. Ellis - Hickory NC, US
Bradley J. Blazer - Granite Falls NC, US
Assignee:
Corning Cable Systems LLC - Hickory NC
International Classification:
G02B006/44
US Classification:
385114
Abstract:
A fiber optic ribbon having a first subunit and a second subunit. The first and second subunits including a plurality of respective optical fibers being connected by respective primary matrices. The first and second subunits being generally aligned along a plane with a secondary matrix contacting portions of the first and second subunits. The secondary matrix having at least one end portion and at least one medial portion. The at least one medial portion and the at least one end portion of the secondary matrix are separated by a gap along at least a portion of the longitudinal axis, thereby defining a preferential tear portion. In other embodiments, the at least one medial portion is recessed relative to the at least one end portion.

Optical Tube Assembly Having A Dry Insert And Methods Of Making The Same

View page
US Patent:
6970629, Nov 29, 2005
Filed:
Dec 19, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/326022
Inventors:
Jason C. Lail - Conover NC, US
David W. Chiasson - Hickory NC, US
Jody L. Greenwood - Hickory NC, US
David A. Seddon - Hickory NC, US
Thomas Ottmann - Neustadt/Co, DE
Assignee:
Corning Cable Systems LLC - Hickory NC
International Classification:
G02B006/44
US Classification:
385100, 385102
Abstract:
An optical tube assembly and methods of manufacturing the same include a tube, at least one optical waveguide, and a dry insert. In one embodiment, the dry insert generally surrounds the at least one optical waveguide and forms a core that is disposed within the tube. In one embodiment, the dry insert is compressed at least about 10 percent for coupling the at least optical waveguide to the interior surface of the tube.

Optical Fiber Array With An Intermittent Profile And Method For Manufacturing The Same

View page
US Patent:
7039282, May 2, 2006
Filed:
Jun 30, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/880905
Inventors:
David W. Chiasson - Hickory NC, US
Christopher M. Quinn - Hickory NC, US
Assignee:
Corning Cable Systems LLC - Hickory NC
International Classification:
G02B 6/44
US Classification:
385114
Abstract:
An optical fiber array having a plurality of intermittent weakened portions allows subunit or groups of the fibers in the optical fiber array to be accessed without the need for special tools and a method for manufacturing the same are provided. In one embodiment, the optical fiber array includes at least two subunits, each of the subunits having a respective subunit matrix, and the optical fiber array also includes a common matrix having a plurality of intermittent weakened portions.
