F02B 47/08
F02B 47/10
US Classification:
12356812, 606052
Abstract:
An EGR cooling system is provided. The EGR cooling system comprising a plurality of EGR coolers configured to cool the EGR to a plurality of successively lower temperatures, where at least one of the plurality of EGR coolers includes a finned EGR cooler that comprises a plurality of channels for dissipating heat in the EGR, the plurality of channels increasing heat transfer surface area while having sufficient fin spacing to avoid clogging. The EGR cooling system may further comprise a catalyst configured to remove particle matters and/or hydrocarbons from the EGR, the catalyst positioned upstream of at least one of the plurality of EGR coolers.

Air Inlet System For An Internal Combustion Engine

View page
US Patent:
7743756, Jun 29, 2010
Filed:
Sep 12, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/209405
Inventors:
Daniel Joseph Styles - Canton MI, US
Anthony William Hudson - Highland MI, US
Ivan Lazich - Skokie IL, US
David Currie - New Hudson MI, US
Assignee:
Ford Global Technologies - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
F02B 47/08
F02B 47/00
US Classification:
12356817, 123590
Abstract:
An air inlet system for an internal combustion engine includes an inlet duct for furnishing air to the engine's cylinders, and a combination port formed within the inlet duct for inducting both recirculated exhaust gas and charge air into the engine. Mixing of the recirculated exhaust gas and the charge air is promoted by a flow director which is mounted at a downstream end of an EGR supply passage, as well as by a flow guide mounted upstream from the flow director, with the flow guide including an aerodynamic projection for causing charge air to move smoothly around the flow director and a swirl generator.

Split-Series Sequential Turbocharged Engine

View page
US Patent:
7908860, Mar 22, 2011
Filed:
Jan 22, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/017829
Inventors:
Christopher Bernard Trombetta - Commerce Township MI, US
Michael Leon Briggs - Howell MI, US
Norbert Andreas Schorn - Aachen, DE
Daniel Joseph Styles - Canton MI, US
Assignee:
Ford Global Technologies, LLC - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
F02B 33/44
US Classification:
60612, 123562
Abstract:
For an internal combustion engine having two cylinder banks forming a V-shaped cylinder block, a turbocharger system including a high pressure turbocharger disposed in a valley between the cylinder banks, a first low-pressure turbocharger disposed adjacent an outer side of one of the cylinder banks, and a second low-pressure turbocharger disposed adjacent an outer side of the second cylinder bank. Intake and exhaust ducts connect the components of the engine and turbocharger system to and electronically controlled valves associated with the ducts permit the system to operate either in a split series mode or a low-pressure-only mode.

Internal And External Lp Egr For Boosted Engines

View page
US Patent:
7934486, May 3, 2011
Filed:
Apr 2, 2010
Appl. No.:
12/753716
Inventors:
Daniel Joseph Styles - Canton MI, US
James Leiby - Dryden MI, US
Assignee:
Ford Global Technologies, LLC - Dearborn MI
International Classification:
F02B 37/12
F02M 25/07
US Classification:
12340623, 60611, 12356812
Abstract:
A method for controlling combustion in a combustion chamber of a turbocharged engine is described. The method includes admitting to the combustion chamber prior to ignition a first amount of exhaust from an intake manifold of the engine, the first amount changing at a first rate in response to a changing engine load. The method also includes retaining in the combustion chamber prior to the ignition a second amount of exhaust from the combustion chamber, the second amount changing at a second rate, greater than the first rate, in response to the changing engine load.
