Electromagnetic Control Apparatus For Varying The Driver Steering Effort Of A Hydraulic Power Steering System

View page
US Patent:
51198983, Jun 9, 1992
Filed:
Oct 24, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/602567
Inventors:
Dennis C. Eckhardt - Saginaw MI
David W. Graber - Millington MI
Andrzej M. Pawlak - Troy MI
Bryan L. Faist - Frankenmuth MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B62D 522
US Classification:
180142
Abstract:
A hydraulic power steering system having conventional relatively rotatable spool and valve body elements for flow regulation, and an integral electromagnetic mechanism which effectively varies the centering force between the spool and valve body to adjust the level of steering assist provided for a given operator steering input. The electromagnetic mechanism includes a rotary magnetic circuit and a stationary magnetic circuit. The rotary magnetic circuit comprises a pair of radially displaced magnetic pole pieces which rotate with the input shaft and a permanent magnet ring element which is disposed between the pole pieces and which rotates with the pinion shaft. The stationary magnetic circuit includes an annular exciting coil disposed in proximity to the rotary magnetic circuit. The exciting coil is energized so as to vary the valve body/spool centering force, and hence the driver steering effort, with vehicle speed.

Method Of Calibrating Power Steering For Uniform Vehicle-To-Vehicle Steering Effort

US Patent:
51842971, Feb 2, 1993
Filed:
Oct 24, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/602568
Inventors:
David W. Graber - Millington MI
Dennis C. Eckhardt - Saginaw MI
Andrzej M. Pawlak - Troy MI
Bryan L. Faist - Frankenmuth MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
B62D 500
US Classification:
36442405
Abstract:
A power steering unit has an electromagnetic mechanism controlled by a computer-based controller for varying the steering effort in accordance with vehicle speed. The same controller is used to adjust the steering effort in accordance with a calibration value to obtain steering effort uniformity. The calibration value is obtained by applying a force to a vehicle wheel and measuring the resulting torque on the steering wheel (or vice versa) and comparing the resulting force to a standard. Any deviation from the standard is stored in the controller as a correction factor. Alternatively, the characteristics of the steering gear and the power steering pump are measured and encoded on the unit when manufactured and the encoded values are read after assembly in a vehicle and used to calculate the correction factor which is then stored in the controller.

Retractable Steering Column Assembly And Method

View page
US Patent:
20190322306, Oct 24, 2019
Filed:
Jul 1, 2019
Appl. No.:
16/458908
Inventors:
- Saginaw MI, US
Richard K. Riefe - Saginaw MI, US
Joen C. Bodtker - Gaines MI, US
Bryan L. Faist - Frankenmuth MI, US
International Classification:
B62D 1/181
B62D 1/10
B62D 1/183
B60N 3/00
Abstract:
A selectively autonomous steering column assembly includes a steering column shaft. Also included is a steering input device coupled to the steering column shaft. Further included is a column adjustment assembly configured to translate the steering column shaft between a retracted position and a driving position. Yet further included is at least one signal indicating when the steering column shaft is in the driving position. When steering column shaft is in the retracted position, directional control is automated, and when the steering column shaft is returned to the driving position as indicated by the at least one signal, direction control via the steering input device is enabled.

Steering Wheel With Keyboard

US Patent:
20170253191, Sep 7, 2017
Filed:
Mar 3, 2016
Appl. No.:
15/059615
Inventors:
- Saginaw MI, US
Bryan L. Faist - Frankenmuth MI, US
International Classification:
B60R 11/02
B60K 35/00
G06F 3/0488
B62D 1/04
Abstract:
A steering wheel assembly includes a panel and a projector assembly. The panel is connected to a steering wheel body and has a first surface disposed opposite a second surface. The projector is connected to the steering wheel body and displays a virtual input device on at least one of the first surface and the second surface, while the steering wheel is in a non-rotational condition.
