Aug 7, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/636841
Inventors:
Arnold Robert Leiboff - Stony Brook NY, US
Assignee:
Tools For Surgery, LLC - Stony Brook NY
International Classification:
A41B 1/10
US Classification:

Abstract:
A prosthetic screen tacking device includes a barbed filament with a perpendicular foot at one end and a loop at the other. The barbs are situated near the foot and angulated in such a manner that they permit movement of the device through tissue in one direction (toward the loop), but prevent movement in the opposite direction (toward the foot). Different barbs and feet are shown. Methods of using the device with or without an associated button are also disclosed.

Stapling Apparatus Having A Curved Anvil And Driver

View page
US Patent:
7210609, May 1, 2007
Filed:
Jul 29, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/193600
Inventors:
Arnold R. Leiboff - Stony Brook NY, US
Joseph Zipper - Miller Place NY, US
Robert Farrish - Coram NY, US
Jay Leiboff - Fair Lawn NJ, US
Assignee:
Tools for Surgery, LLC - Stony Brook NY
International Classification:
A61B 17/04
A61B 17/068
A61B 17/00
US Classification:
2271801, 227176, 2271811, 227 19
Abstract:
Stapler, in particular for hemorrhoidal use, includes a body, an elongate, fixed jaw part connected to the body and including a curved anvil defining staple-forming pockets and a curved portion defining an opening bound on lateral and longitudinal sides, an actuating jaw part including a curved staple driver and optionally a cutting knife, a trigger coupled to the body for actuating the actuating jaw part and an adjustment mechanism for moving the actuating jaw part to vary a longitudinal dimension of the opening defined between a staple cartridge and the anvil. When the actuating jaw part is actuated by the trigger, the staple driver forces staple blanks in the staple cartridge into staple-forming pockets of the anvil to form staples in tissue retained in the opening, while the cutting knife, when present, amputates the tissue.

Tubular Apparatus For Drainage Of The Colon And Method And Guidewire For Colonic Intubation

View page
US Patent:
7338478, Mar 4, 2008
Filed:
Apr 8, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/820518
Inventors:
Arnold R. Leiboff - Stony Brook NY, US
International Classification:
A61M 1/00
A61M 5/128
A61M 3/00
A61M 5/44
A61M 25/00
A61M 31/00
US Classification:
604317, 604 35, 604 36, 604 44, 604540, 604322, 604355, 604528, 604506, 604514
Abstract:
Method for draining and decompressing a colon in which a drainage tube is inserted through the anus into the colon to extend through the entire colon. The drainage tube is fixed in position and suction is applied therethrough to cause fecal matter to pass therein through apertures and be withdrawn from the colon. The drainage tube is inserted by inserting a guidewire into the colon through the anus, manipulating and pushing the guidewire to the cecum, passing a filament through the colon wall to engage the guidewire, pulling the guidewire out of the colon and anus to draw the filament through the colon and out of the anus, attaching the drainage tube to the filament and drawing the filament with attached drainage tube through the anus into the colon. The invention also relates to constructions of the guidewire, the drainage tube and methods for inserting drainage tubes using guidewires.

Anastomosis Leak Testing Apparatus And Methods

View page
US Patent:
8216159, Jul 10, 2012
Filed:
Oct 8, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/247257
Inventors:
Arnold R. Leiboff - Stony Brook NY, US
Assignee:
Tools For Surgery, LLC - Stony Brook NY
International Classification:
A61B 5/103
A61B 5/117
A61B 5/00
A61M 31/00
A61M 37/00
US Classification:
600593, 604 26, 600560, 600561, 600587
Abstract:
Anastomosis leak testers for testing for leaks in gastrointestinal anastomoses in patients include an inflation pump and a conduit part. The inflation pump has a compressible portion and a mechanism for providing a uni-directional flow of air through the inflation pump upon intermittent compressing thereof. Conduit parts have an interior space, a portion to be inserted into an anus of a patient or arm to be mated to a gastric tube, rectal tube or endoscope, a pressure relief valve and an indicator pin, and a rearward arm connected to the inflation pump. Upon actuation of the inflation pump, air flows through the inflation pump and through the conduit part into the patient's bowel. When the air pressure in the bowel exceeds a specified pressure, air is released through the pressure relief valve and ejects the indicator pin, which alerts the surgeon that the desired rectal pressure has been reached.

Air Introduction Device For Anastomotic Leak Testing

View page
US Patent:
20050059992, Mar 17, 2005
Filed:
Sep 17, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/664366
Inventors:
Arnold Leiboff - Stony Brook NY, US
International Classification:
A61M029/00
US Classification:
606197000
Abstract:
Air introduction device for anastomotic leak testing including an elastomeric body optimally configured for partial insertion into the rectum, occlusion of the anus and attachment to a commercially available insufflation bulb. The air introduction device may be dip molded in one piece to form a single use, disposable product. The body has a proximal portion insertable into an anus of a person to cause the anus to constrict around it and form a seal against the anal wall, a distal portion mating with the insufflation bulb to enable air to be directed therefrom into and through the body and an expanded portion which is larger than the proximal portion and interposed between the proximal portion and the distal portion. The expanded portion occludes the anus by engaging with the anal opening to limit insertion of the proximal portion into the anus and seal the body against the anal opening. Embodiments incorporating means to allow the insertion of an endoscope through the device for visual inspection of an anastomosis, and means to prevent over-inflation of the rectum are described.

Apparatus And Method For Intestinal Irrigation

View page
US Patent:
20050070933, Mar 31, 2005
Filed:
Sep 26, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/672053
Inventors:
Arnold Leiboff - Stony Brook NY, US
International Classification:
A61B017/08
US Classification:
606153000, 604284000
Abstract:
Drain tube for colonic irrigation including a rigid body having a tubular portion and a side arm extending from a side of the tubular portion. The tubular portion has a proximal end adapted to be inserted into a bowel and a distal end through which an irrigation tube is inserted. The body is formed to be rigid and transparent via an injection molding process. The transparency of the body enables the effluent through the side arm to be visualized so that the colonic irrigation can be stopped when the effluent is clear. Additional improvements to a drain tube and method for using the same are also disclosed.
