Methods For Diagnosing Parasitic Helminth Infections

View page
US Patent:
20020192713, Dec 19, 2002
Filed:
May 13, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/145204
Inventors:
Richard Cummings - Edmond OK, US
Anthony Nyame - Edmond OK, US
International Classification:
G01N033/53
US Classification:
435/007100
Abstract:
Species of Schistosoma, such as and which infect humans and animals, synthesize the Lewis(Le), lacdiNAc (LDN) and fucosylated LDN (LDNF) carbohydrate antigens. Parasitic helminths other than schistosomes, such as (responsible for heartworm), (a liver fluke) and (intestinal fluke) also synthesize the LDN and LDNF antigens, but they do not synthesize, or synthesize only undetectable amounts of, Leantigen. The differential detection and abundance of the Le, LDN and LDNF antigens in sera and other bodily fluids of individuals is diagnostic of the presence of active and/or previous infections from schistosomes and other parasitic helminths. The present invention is directed to methods of differential detection and diagnosis of parasitic helminth infections, and kits for use in such methods.

US Patent:
62617885, Jul 17, 2001
Filed:
Sep 21, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/400563
Inventors:
Richard D. Cummings - Edmond OK
Anthony Kwame Nyame - Edmond OK
Assignee:
The Board of Regents of the University of Oklahoma - Norman OK
International Classification:
G01N 3353
G01N 33569
A61K 3944
A61K 3900
US Classification:
435 722
Abstract:
Species of schistosoma , such as schistosoma mansoni, S. japonicum and S. haematobium, which infect humans and animals, synthesize the Lewis. sup. x (Le. sup. x), lacdiNAc (LDN) and fucosylated LDN (LDNF) carbohydrate antigens. Parasitic helminths other than schistosomes, such as Dirofilaria immitis (responsible for heartworm), Fasciola hepatica (a liver fluke) and Haemonchus contortus (intestinal fluke) also synthesize the LDN and LDNF antigens, but they do not synthesize, or synthesize only undetectable amounts of, Le. sup. x antigen. The differential detection and abundance of the Le. sup. x, LDN and LDNF antigens in sera and other bodily fluids of individuals is diagnostic of the presence of active and/or previous infections from schistosomes and other parasitic helminths. The present invention is directed to methods of differential detection and diagnosis of parasitic helminth infections, and kits for use in such methods.
