Variable Height Radiating Aperture

View page
US Patent:
8648759, Feb 11, 2014
Filed:
Sep 30, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/249587
Inventors:
Allen Wang - Fullerton CA, US
Fangchou Yang - Los Angeles CA, US
Jason G. Milne - Hawthorne CA, US
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Waltham MA
International Classification:
H01Q 13/10
US Classification:
343770, 343700 MS, 343767, 343795, 343797, 343803, 343816, 343817, 343820, 343821, 343853
Abstract:
Provided herein are devices, systems and techniques for establishing a variable height conformal antenna array having a planar backplane. More particularly, positioning of radiating elements can be made insensitive to variable ground height by selecting a suitable radiating element, such as a flared notch and arranging them to have a profile such that their outer extremities are positioned along a conformal, curved shape. Differences in radiator heights can be taken up by the addition of parallel vertical ground planes disposed between the radiating elements and the backplane. Adjacent vertical ground planes effectively form cutoff waveguide sections that naturally isolate the backplane from the radiating elements. The vertical ground planes edges effectively form a virtual curved ground for the radiating elements, following curvature of the array profile. Accordingly, heights of radiating elements are uniform with respect to the virtual ground, while being allowed to vary with respect to the backplane.

Co-Phased, Dual Polarized Antenna Array With Broadband And Wide Scan Capability

View page
US Patent:
20130082893, Apr 4, 2013
Filed:
Sep 30, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/249491
Inventors:
Allen Wang - Fullerton CA, US
Fangchou Yang - Los Angeles CA, US
Hee Kyung Kim - El Segundo CA, US
Assignee:
RAYTHEON COMPANY - Waltham MA
International Classification:
H01Q 21/24
US Classification:
343810, 343848
Abstract:
Provided herein are devices, systems and techniques for establishing a coincident-phased dual polarization array aperture enabling a wide scan capability, while also presenting a bandwidth of at least about 40%. Radiating elements of such an array include a first ground plane extending between lower and upper edges and a first radiating element positioned above the upper edge of the first ground plane. The array elements also include a second ground plane extending between respective lower and upper edges and disposed substantially orthogonal to the first ground plane. A second radiating element is positioned above the upper edge of the second ground plane, such that the first and second radiating elements have different polarizations.Parallel ground planes of adjacent antenna elements of an array of like elements enhance array performance by providing isolation between such radiating elements and backplane ground by way of a phenomenon generally known as waveguide-below-cutoff.

Flared Notch Radiator Assembly And Antenna

View page
US Patent:
61279846, Oct 3, 2000
Filed:
Apr 16, 1999
Appl. No.:
9/293145
Inventors:
Douglas O. Klebe - Redondo Beach CA
Lan Tso - Redondo Beach CA
Jeffrey A. Bille - Torrance CA
Gary L. Crandall - Los Angeles CA
Allen Wang - Buena Park CA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
H01Q 1310
US Classification:
343770
Abstract:
An improved injection molded radiator assembly and antenna assembly can be made using multiple such radiator assemblies. The radiator assembly includes an injection molded radiator enclosure that forms an RF waveguide channel. A circuit/RF probe subassembly is mated to the radiator enclosure that houses a circulator assembly, input and output connectors, and an RF probe. An environmental plug is disposed in the radiator enclosure to seal the RF waveguide channel from the external environment.

Wide-Band/Dual-Band Stacked-Disc Radiators On Stacked-Dielectric Posts Phased Array Antenna

View page
US Patent:
57450790, Apr 28, 1998
Filed:
Jun 28, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/678383
Inventors:
Allen T.S. Wang - Buena Park CA
Kuan M. Lee - Brea CA
Ruey S. Chu - Cerritos CA
Assignee:
Raytheon Company - Lexington MA
International Classification:
H01Q 138
H01Q 148
US Classification:
343700MS
Abstract:
A very wide-band or dual-band phased array antenna using stacked-disc radiators on stacked-dielectric cylindrical posts to form radiator elements. Each radiator element includes a ground plane, a lower dielectric cylindrical post of a high dielectric material adjacent the ground plane, a lower thin conductive radiator disc formed on the upper surface of the lower dielectric post, an upper dielectric cylindrical post of a low dielectric material disposed on top of the lower post and lower radiator disc, and an upper thin radiator disc or annular ring formed on the upper surface of the upper post. The first radiator disc is excited by two pairs of probes arranged in orthogonal locations. Each pair of probes can be fed by coaxial cables with 180 degree phase reversal. The second radiator disc or annular ring is a parasitic radiator without feeding probes.
