Pendulum Rolling Resistant Test

View page
US Patent:
6494076, Dec 17, 2002
Filed:
Sep 20, 2001
Appl. No.:
09/856346
Inventors:
Alan Neville Gent - Ravenna OH
William Allen Arnold - Akron OH
John Darrell Carter - Uniontown OH
David Dale Gallagher - Marysville OH
Robin Bovaird Steven - Dublin OH
John James Gartland - Delaware OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
G01N 356
US Classification:
73 9
Abstract:
A pendulum device is used to test the rolling resistance of a material. The device includes a rolling unit for contact with the material being tested, an assembly for initiating pendulum motion of the device, and measuring the amplitude of the pendulum motion over time. The rate of decrease of the amplitude of the pendulum motion is a measure of the rolling resistance of the material.

Eccentric Mounted Rotor For Mixing Solids And Liquid In A Chamber

View page
US Patent:
52677893, Dec 7, 1993
Filed:
Dec 13, 1991
Appl. No.:
7/794384
Inventors:
Alan N. Gent - Cuyahoga Falls OH
Richard L. Henry - Akron OH
Assignee:
University of Akron - Akron OH
International Classification:
B01F 716
B29B 710
US Classification:
366 98
Abstract:
A device for mixing liquids, solids or combinations thereof, particularly viscous liquids and polymeric solids comprises a mixing vessel having therein a substantially cylindrical mixing chamber; a rotor with a cross-section in the shape of a convex-convex lens having outer convex surfaces substantially identical in shape to the inner wall surface of the cylindrical mixing chamber and with a longitudinal dimension substantially identical to that of said cylindrical mixing chamber, the rotor being variably positionable so it's rotating axis is parallel to the axis of the mixing chamber, but eccentric thereto, and mounted within the mixing chamber upon a base having a drive mechanism for the rotor disposed through it; and a lid for tightly sealing the chamber formed by the mixing vessel and the base. The rotor preferably fills from 28 to 100% of the volume of the mixing chamber; most preferably 50 to 75%. The rotor may be heliciform along its longitudinal axis.

Mechanical In Situ Curometer

View page
US Patent:
52215008, Jun 22, 1993
Filed:
Jul 10, 1992
Appl. No.:
7/911816
Inventors:
Alan N. Gent - Cuyahoga Falls OH
George S. Fielding-Russell - Stow OH
Ahmet Talug - Stow OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
B29C 3500
US Classification:
264 401
Abstract:
An in situ curometer has been developed to follow the cure of thick articles during molding, by measuring continuously the dynamic mechanical properties (shear modulus and loss angle). The apparatus is designed to provide cure data on curable articles such as rubber products and components in situ, during the curing of the article, to improve manufacturing cure efficiencies. The curometer is a small-scale version of an Oscillating Disk Rheometer, designed to operate through a mold wall. An approximate theoretical treatment has been developed to relate the observed torque and loss angle to the dynamic properties of the rubber compound.

Energy Absorbing Unit

View page
US Patent:
40592545, Nov 22, 1977
Filed:
Oct 28, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/736618
Inventors:
George Samuel Fielding-Russell - Stow OH
Alan N. Gent - Stow OH
Assignee:
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company - Akron OH
International Classification:
B60R 1908
F16F 712
US Classification:
267140
Abstract:
An energy absorber comprises an elastomeric member in a substantially trapezoidal configuration, a piston connected to the apex of the trapezoid, and piston retaining and mounting supports. The elastomer absorbs energy by virtue of its inclined buckling columns forming the sides of the trapezoid while the piston is forced to move in a substantially horizontal plane by the piston retaining and mounting supports. The energy absorber, when applied to vehicle applications, provides a bumper mount that accepts frontal and lateral force impact and lends itself to bumper jacking and towing forces.
